Working with our funeral director when my father-in-law passed in acquiring the benefits from the VA was a godsend as my in-laws did not have any savings or insurance to cover his final expenses. We were ever thankful to not only be guided through the process by him but also additional help from the local veterans cemetery staff on where to hold a small celebration of life at a local VFW hall for little to no cost. Just remember your check not only with the national and state VAs but to look to see if your local county or government offers services for your loved one who served.
